Being A Comedian Takes Practice

blog for the boys

I went to the Old Chicago in LoDo last night for yet another open mic.  The way the open mic works at the Old Chicago is that first there’s a comedy contest featuring the talents of several local comedians which is followed by a headliner.  Last night’s headliner was a guy named Matt Baetz, who, by his testimony, is soon traveling to Afghanistan to perform in a USO show for the troops.  (“Who’s troops?” you ask.  We’re not sure, but I can tell you that Matt’s Pakistani is getting very good.)  Matt left us new comedians with some sage advice.

Matt performed his act for a good hour and change.  It was obvious he was no amateur.  His jokes and songs were well timed and hilarious.  He even managed to hold attention of a sparse crowd despite constant interruption from some distracting patrons at the bar.  More interesting to me than Matt’s joke telling was a moment where he reflected on his time in Denver.

First he thanked all of the people that he’d been working within the comedy scene for all of their support.  He then continued onto something that I found quite inspiring.  To all of the comedians in the room he said that opportunities like the open mic at Old Chicago were incredibly advantageous for beginners and veterans.

One of the few bars that's lets me use a mic to vomit on

Bars that host these events offer young comedians the chance to live out their dreams.  He encouraged all the newbies to keep at comedy and in good time we’d have the chance to meet our comedic destiny (or tragedy).  Referring to his set, Matt said that “in only six short years, anyone could be this good.”  Jokingly disappointed, he added, “this is good?”

I really appreciate this advice.  He reiterated something that I’ve said before and bares repeating; just like getting good at any skill, comedy takes time and practice.  Thanks for the reassurance, Matt.  And thank you, Old Chicago on Market Street, for hosting this great opportunity.

Also, thanks to Blum and Nelson for coming out to watch me “kill” it again.  Video to follow soon…Like right now!!!! click here
