Becoming A Comedian Is One Part Practice And One Part Cat
If I’ve learned anything over the years it’s that practice makes perfect. Adopting this idiom has been one of the most difficult parts of my new journey to becoming a comedian. Practice is hard. Really hard and boring. Generally, however, the pay off is huge.
The success of my goal requires that I incorporate regular practice into my daily routine. It’s also important to realize that interruptions will occur during these times. Improving my skill means rolling with the punches.
In light of practice and putting the gears of my dream in motion, I beckoned my oldest brother, Sean, for assistance. He is a voice actor but also dabbles in music (i.e. plays ukulele, banjo, some guitar and piano, and skin flute).
*Side Note–for the past year and a half I have been trying to learn to play guitar.
Anyway, because of his hobbies, he has a host of audio and visual equipment that can help me out. Sean agreed to lend me his stuff for an undisclosed amount of time and the other night came to my house to set it up. I plan on using his microphone and video camera to practice routines and material for the future (possibly to be posted on this site…we’ll have to wait and see).
We set up the mic and a camera. To check the sound and video quality, we decided to play a catchy little song that he found a on youtube.com called F**k You by Garfunkel and Oates. It is quite possibly one of the gayest songs for two guys to perform alone. It also one of the most awkwardly incestuous songs for brothers to play with each other. What can I say? I really like my brother.
We started to record a performance when all of a sudden my cat, Tookie, stole the show; not that there was much to steal. We’re not very good. Actually, it’s pretty terrible. I blame myself mostly, but you know what? Who cares? It’s practice and practice makes perfect comedians. Allen Iverson knows the importance of practice. All I can hope for is to get better the next time.
Here’s our version of F**k You. What do you think…

I find it extra hilarious that the cat f*cks off as soon as the song is over.
All of the attention I’ve been paying him through these interweb blog postings is really going to his head. All of a sudden, he’s a real shutterbug. Used to be he’d claw at your face and move on.
